The right time to start your flea and tick prevention depends alot on the climate where you live.  In the north or midwest, it is vet recommended to start a flea and tick prevention program as early as March and continue until the first hard frost.  In warmer climates like the south, use  flea and tick prevention all year round.  Talk with your vet about safe products to use for year-round use.

While there are many flea and tick prevention options available today, the vast majority of pet owners choose to protect their pets with monthly spot-on topicals or oral tablets.  This is due primarily to convenience and effectiveness.  It only takes a minute application to protect your dog or cat from fleas, ticks and mosquitoes for a full month.

K9 Advantix for Dogs under 10 lbs, 6-pack- This is a once a month topical.  It is used for the prevention and treatment of fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes.  It kills and repels.  In addition to killing flea larvae, Advantix kills adult fleas before they can lay eggs and stops them from biting within 5 minutes  of application.  This product was made for dogs only and should not be used on cats.

Advantage for Dogs under 10 lbs, 4-pack- This is an excellent product for flea prevention alone.  It kills fleas and their larvae in only 20 minutes.  It's water-resistant so it's great for water dogs.  Also great for cats Advantage 6pk Cat Purple 10 Lbs And Over

bioSpot SPOT ON for Dogs Under 15 lbs for Puppies, 3-pk- This can be used for cats or dogs.  This is another excellent spot-on flea and tick preventative.  It offers complete protection against all stages of the flea life cycle and repels ticks and mosquitoes.  This applies to dog or cat purchases.

 Frontline Plus 6pk Medium 23-44 Lbs- and Frontline.  This is another well-known flea and tick preventative. Frontline Plus provides even more complete protection because it contains an insect growth regulator which prevents flea eggs and larvae from developing.  Both are water resistant.  There are formulas for dogs and cats.

Two other prevention products different from the ones mentioned above are oral tablets such as:
 Program for Dogs 11-20 lbs- We also have this for cats or in liquid suspension for cats.  This one prevents flea eggs and larvae from developing and can be used with a topical like Frontline which kills the adult fleas.  It may also be used with Capstar.
Capstar Tablets for Cats 11.4 mg Tablets (2 - 25 lbs.)- This is a fast acting oral tablet that starts to kill fleas within 30 minutes.  One dose lasts for 24 hours.  It's especially good for situations where animals are more exposed to fleas like in dog parks, boarding or grooming kennels.  It can be used on cats and dogs.
